A murmuration

A winter’s day illuminated with bright waters, blue sky and fresh, mild air. This is the type of day that reminds me to breathe in. Close my eyes and feel the sun on my eye lids. Inhale the air and listen to the sounds of life.

Laughter and chatter is drowned out. A rush of sound alerts me to a spectacle. At first it appears in the symmetry of a swarm but elegantly unfolds and folds, revealing a flock of starlings. A murmuration. Synchronised silhouettes dance against the blue sky, protecting themselves and each other. Great pace and frenzy. The display dissipates as swiftly as it evolved.

I’ve been transfixed in sensory wonder, a visual and auditory seduction like no other.

Glimpses of those moments lace my thoughts for the rest of that day and the next. I share my wonder with others.

On reflection I consider a moment of distraction could have spelled the loss of such an opportunity. Was it luck that I noticed or took this with me so meaningfully.
